Hidden inside this unassuming backroads gas station is a true gem of a diner.
While camping at Sardis Lake, our camp-neighbor informed us that the Yanush Store had the best burgers around. Always on the hunt for the best cheeseburger, we hit the store on our way out of town.
We paid for our gas and our burgers at the same time, then half of us sat down at a shared table in the air conditioned dining area and listened to charming locals tell tales about drinking at Pete's Place during prohibition.
The other half of us sat outside in the sweltering noonday heat.
Our burgers took a good long while to prepare, but the wait was easily overlooked because it was a busy holiday weekend and the burgers were freaking delicious when they finally arrived.
I did not arrive at the appropriate hunger level, but shoved the entire burger in my face anyway because it was so irresistible. I would pay for this later in the day when, on a long and painful run, I recalled the famous burger and nearly puked. Still, I hope to return to this random gas station and grill again someday.
Now every time I pass a little gas station I wonder if they are harboring delicious hamburgers inside.
